Unbearable Hardship Osun Workers Slam Government Over Delay In Minimum Wage

Several workers in Osogbo, the state capital, shared their concerns with journalists on Monday, emphasizing that the long-awaited wage adjustment has been overdue for some time.

One civil servant, identified as Opemipo, noted that the state’s workforce had been eagerly anticipating the implementation, accusing the government of intentionally stalling.

“I don’t understand the delay. Other neighboring states have already implemented theirs. What’s holding us back?” she asked. “The economic hardship is unbearable. I urge Governor Adeleke to act quickly.”

Another worker, speaking anonymously, expressed disappointment, stating that Osun was expected to be one of the first states to implement the wage hike. He explained that the workers’ current salaries are insufficient to meet their families’ needs due to the rising cost of living.

“We are deeply concerned. No matter how small, the new wage would help ease our financial burdens,” he said. “The fact that the government hasn’t communicated its plans is a serious worry. States like Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, Kwara, and Ogun have already moved forward—why not Osun?”

The civil servant added that the delay reflects a lack of commitment to workers’ welfare and urged the government to quickly clarify its intentions.

A senior officer also criticized the government’s failure to provide a clear roadmap for implementing the wage increase, describing it as insensitive to the workers’ plight.

“I wonder if the government understands what civil servants are going through in these difficult times,” he said. “The delay suggests they might be planning to offer an unreasonable wage. We’re struggling to cope, and the delay is adding to our problems.”

In response, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, reassured workers that the committee set up by the governor to address the minimum wage issue would soon complete its work for the necessary approvals.
