University Of Jos Protest: ASUU Members Demand Government Action To Avert Strike (Details)

On Tuesday, ASUU members at the University of Jos protested, calling on the Federal Government to act swiftly to prevent the strike. The protest disrupted ongoing second semester exams as union members and students marched through the campus with placards demanding attention to their grievances.
The protesters were received by the university’s top management, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya. ASUU’s Vice Chairman, Prof. Kiri Jaryum, presented a 9-point demand to the VC, emphasizing the union’s long-standing issues and the government’s lack of response.
The demands include payment of earned academic allowances, revitalization funds, salary adjustments, and the signing of the Nimi Briggs committee agreement. The Vice Chancellor expressed support for ASUU’s demands and promised to forward the protest letter to the federal government, adding a call for increased funding for public universities.
ASUU had recently threatened a nationwide strike, giving the government a two-week ultimatum to address their demands. Although the government announced new governing councils for federal universities, ASUU rejected this action, insisting their primary demands remain unmet.
