In a recent video statement, Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, expressed his unwavering determination to contest what he perceives as an unjust impeachment process. Shaibu’s impeachment by the State House of Assembly has sparked controversy and raised questions about the fairness of the process. He asserts that the allegations of misconduct against him, which led to his impeachment, lack merit and validity. Despite the adoption of the report by a seven-man panel investigating the allegations, Shaibu maintains his innocence and denounces the entire impeachment procedure as illegal and unjust.
The retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa-led panel conducted hearings on the allegations, but Shaibu and his counsel failed to appear to defend him. This absence led to the panel’s conclusion and subsequent endorsement by the State Assembly. However, Shaibu argues that he was not given a fair opportunity to present his case and refute the accusations leveled against him.
Throughout the video statement, Shaibu underscores the broader implications of his impeachment, characterizing it not only as an attack on his person but also as a threat to democratic principles. He accuses the State Assembly of undermining democratic norms and attempting to stifle dissent by ousting him from office. Shaibu portrays the Assembly’s actions as a dangerous slide towards dictatorship and a direct challenge to the foundation of democracy in Edo State.
Moreover, Shaibu suggests that his impeachment may be politically motivated, driven by his ambition to contest the upcoming state Governorship election. He alleges that certain forces within the political landscape seek to hinder his political aspirations through unjust means. Despite these challenges, Shaibu remains resolute and calls upon well-meaning Nigerians to rally against the perceived injustices and uphold the principles of fairness and democracy.
As the 38-year-old successor assumes the role of Deputy Governor, Shaibu pledges to continue his fight against what he considers an infringement on his rights and an affront to democratic values. He remains committed to seeking redress through legal means and vows to pursue justice until his name is cleared of all allegations.
