War On Corruption Under Threat: Tinubu Blasts Judicial Intimidation

Speaking at the 6th Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and National Judicial Institute (NJI) Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, noted that while judicial reforms in recent years have improved the prosecution of corruption cases, significant challenges remain.

Tinubu remarked that corruption continues to deprive Nigeria of its resources, and the fight against this “cancer” requires a collective effort from all Nigerians, not just anti-corruption agencies. He further noted that emerging financial crimes, such as cryptocurrency fraud, have added complexity to the issue, necessitating more knowledge among judicial officers.

He acknowledged efforts by his administration to improve the welfare of judges, including salary increases and official accommodations in Abuja. The President also highlighted strategic investments in social programs, like the Students Loan Fund and Consumer Credit Scheme, as part of the government’s efforts to reduce the economic pressure that fuels corrupt practices.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and other key stakeholders at the event praised the collaboration between the judiciary and anti-corruption agencies. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi also called for a review of laws on economic crimes and stronger partnerships to tackle corruption in the country.
