National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gears up for a crucial meeting on Wednesday, tensions are rising between the PDP Governors Forum and Nyesom Wike, according to The Punch.

The discord has its roots in the ongoing political strife in Rivers State, which has significantly impacted governance and deepened the rift within the state House of Assembly. The divide features factions loyal to Wike and those aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Despite efforts at mediation from President Bola Tinubu and other key figures, the dispute remains unresolved. Legal conflicts are ongoing in both Port Harcourt and Abuja, complicating the situation further. Recently, the NWC, led by Amb Umar Damagum, conducted a congress in Rivers State that controversially awarded control of the state party structure to Wike, even in the face of a court injunction.

Accusations have been levied against Wike by Chief Edwin Clark, who claims Wike is applying undue pressure on Fubara and the PDP. Wike has responded with threats of decisive actions in PDP-controlled states, asserting his dominance over the party. The PDP Governors Forum has voiced its support for Fubara and is urging the NWC to affirm his role as the legitimate party leader in Rivers State.

The upcoming NWC meeting is set to address several key issues, including the recent ward and state congresses and the ongoing litigation involving Rivers State legislators. Former PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan has called for a vote of no confidence in Damagum, citing breaches of the party’s constitution. Meanwhile, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and others are emphasizing the need for a clear and consistent application of party rules to resolve the current crisis.
