According to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), exemptions to the flight ban include over-flight aircraft traversing Niger airspace, emergency aircraft, and special flights.

However, the ban remains intact as a response to the political unrest following the coup d’état in the Republic of Niger on July 26, 2023.

In the wake of these developments, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened a summit to address the situation, resulting in resolutions that included the closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger, along with the establishment of a no-fly zone for commercial flights to and from Niger.

A statement issued by NAMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Abdullahi Musa, emphasized that the ban, initially announced through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and later transitioned into an Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC), remains in effect.

It reiterates the suspension of all commercial flights between Niger and Nigeria, as well as flights transiting Nigerian airspace en route to Niger.

Despite the restrictions, exemptions have been outlined to accommodate specific flight scenarios, ensuring the continuity of essential aviation activities while upholding security measures.
