Nigeria Navy Seizes 620 Tonnes Of Indian Hemp, Arrests Suspect In Kogi

Commander Mosses Epelle of the Nigerian Navy Ship Luguard disclosed that the interception occurred at the Jamata checkpoint around 12 pm on April 4, 2024. Personnel deployed at the checkpoint apprehended a navy blue golf car carrying 620 parcels of the suspected substance.

While one of the suspects managed to escape, the driver, Aliyu Lawal, was arrested. Lawal confessed to transporting the substance from Edo State to Abuja, passing through Lokoja.

In addition to the seized drugs, authorities recovered a Police MESS membership card and a camouflage jungle hat from the suspect’s possession.

Despite Lawal’s attempts to bribe the personnel, they upheld the core values of the Nigeria Navy, including professionalism, integrity, and teamwork, leading to his arrest.

Commander Epelle emphasized that the Navy is committed to curbing insecurity in Kogi State, and such arrests serve as a deterrent to other criminals. He urged hoodlums to refrain from illicit activities, warning that the law would catch up with them.

Upon receiving the seized substance, the superintendent of narcotics from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kogi State, Olorunfemi Abolarin, stated that the agency would conduct a thorough investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, Lawal will be charged to court.

The interception of 620 tonnes of cannabis sativa highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and illicit activities. This seizure underscores the collaborative approach between the Navy and NDLEA in ensuring the security and well-being of communities in Kogi State.
