Nigerian Army Reacts To Protest By Soldiers At Sokoto Detention Facility

In response to the incident, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, announced that an investigation has been initiated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to ascertain the extent of the situation and determine appropriate measures.

The incident, which occurred amidst soldiers’ demands for better living conditions, led to the unfortunate shooting of Lcpl Charles Ekefure. The Army expressed regret over the incident, deeming it incompatible with the leadership style of the Chief of Army Staff.

While acknowledging the grievances expressed by the detained soldiers, the Army emphasized that mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are serious offenses. It vowed to sanction any soldier found culpable of unruly behavior and failure to exhaust available channels for addressing grievances.

The statement also affirmed the Army’s commitment to upholding professional standards and ensuring the welfare of detainees, even those awaiting sentencing for aiding terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits.

Amidst calls for oversight, the Nigerian Army reiterated its dedication to maintaining a just and fair system while addressing security challenges in collaboration with other security agencies.
