Court Sentences Three Police Officers To Life Imprisonment For Murder

The court found Juliet Ekwueme, Ugochukwu Obiakor, and Raphael Chike guilty of murdering 42-year-old Chukwunonso Uchenwoke from Mbosi, Ihiala Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on May 14, 2016, at No. 13 Ibe Street, East Niger Layout, Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area. Following the incident, the officers were dismissed from the force.

Justice A.O. Okuma ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the convictions for conspiracy and murder. These charges violate Sections 495(a) and 274(I) of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Volume II, Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991, as amended. The defendants were sentenced to seven years for conspiracy and life imprisonment for manslaughter.

Trulaw Chambers, led by C.J. Okeke and authorized by the Anambra State Attorney General, handled the prosecution. Okeke hailed the verdict as a victory for justice, while the defense counsel for the first defendant, G.A. Oluwatuase, expressed intentions to appeal. Legal representatives for the second and third defendants, C.E. Ezenwa and C.J. Agbata, stated they would review the judgment before deciding on further action.
