Nigerians and social media users are abuzz following a bold statement from Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Okonjo-Iweala has announced her intention to take action against those spreading false information about her and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

The controversy erupted after a fake news report falsely attributed to Okonjo-Iweala suggested that she had made disparaging remarks about Governor Otti. The report attempted to exploit her recent speech advocating for a social contract in Nigeria. In response, Okonjo-Iweala took to Twitter to denounce the misinformation. She stated: “FAKE!! I have taken screenshots of a fake article purported to be written by me about Abia State and its Gov HE Alex Otti that tried to fraudulently build on my recent speech on a social contract for Nigeria. Political hacks beware of using me for propaganda. I shall take action!”

Her tweet has sparked a flurry of reactions online. Many Nigerians have urged her to pursue legal action against the perpetrators, while others have expressed support for her stance against the misuse of her name for political gain.

This development highlights the ongoing issue of fake news and misinformation in Nigerian politics, with prominent figures like Okonjo-Iweala standing up against such deceptive practices.
