In a statement on Saturday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, clarified that Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is temporarily acting in Lagbaja’s stead.
Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu stressed that all necessary protocols are in place to ensure smooth operations within the Army. He refuted claims of any leadership confusion, stating, “The Nigerian Army is a well-structured institution with clear procedures in place for all situations.” He further noted that this is not the first time a Chief of Policy and Plans has managed affairs in the absence of a service chief.
Additionally, he pointed out that ongoing Army activities, such as promotion exercises, continue as scheduled. Recent promotion results for officers from Captain to Major were released, and other promotion exercises, like the one for Master Warrant Officers, are progressing without disruption.
Contrary to rumors, the COAS’s absence has not affected routine Army operations or delayed promotions. The Army’s leadership remains committed to its duties and assures the public that the institution remains fully capable of defending Nigeria.
