Profile: Meet The Woman Set To Become APC Deputy Governorship Candidate In Lagos
According to Ireporter Online, Hon. Princess Damilola Sonayon-James is expected to be officially unveiled as the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.
She is projected to run alongside incumbent Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat, who is believed to have emerged as the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Her selection reportedly followed wide consultations within the APC leadership, with stakeholders said to have been influenced by her political experience, strong grassroots network, and record in community development initiatives. An official announcement from the party is anticipated in the coming days to confirm the development.
Sonayon-James currently serves as the Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos State. She hails from the Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West Local Council Development Area and is a member of the Badagry royal lineage, being the granddaughter of the late Oba Afolabi Ogungbe James.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Human Resources Management from the University of Hull, United Kingdom, as well as a Master of Science degree in Social Work, with a specialization in Community Development, from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Her political background includes service as Supervisory Councillor in Badagry West LCDA and membership of the Think Tank of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development. Over the years, she has built a reputation for active grassroots mobilisation, women-focused advocacy, and community engagement.
Supporters of her emergence highlight her family’s longstanding alignment with the political ideals associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as well as their support for the administration of former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
Her nomination has reportedly been welcomed by APC members and stakeholders across Badagry Division, who view it as a step toward improving representation for the coastal communities of Lagos State.
The name “Sonayon,” rooted in the Ègùn language spoken in Badagry and surrounding areas, translates to “Tomorrow is Bright” or “Better Days Ahead.”
