RCCG Donates Over $265,000 As FG Moves To Bring 500 Nigerians Home From South Africa

The Federal Government has disclosed that the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), led by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, donated $265,854 to support the evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the donation will be used to purchase 500 one-way air tickets for Nigerians seeking to return home amid renewed xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa.

The ministry, through its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, expressed appreciation to the church for the financial intervention, describing it as a significant demonstration of compassion and solidarity towards Nigerians facing difficult circumstances abroad.

The government said the contribution also highlights the importance of collaboration between faith-based organisations and public institutions in responding to humanitarian challenges and assisting Nigerians in distress.

The Federal Government commenced the ongoing evacuation exercise on June 10, 2026, following renewed reports of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks involving Africans and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

Since the exercise began, 1,640 Nigerians have reportedly been brought back to the country. The government said it fully sponsored the return of 1,385 people, while philanthropic support accounted for the evacuation of another 255 Nigerians.

The ministry further disclosed that 202 Nigerians are currently awaiting final screening by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs before they can be evacuated to Nigeria.

Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in South Africa, including the High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General in Johannesburg, are also continuing to work with Nigerian community associations and other relevant channels to assist citizens who wish to return home.

The Federal Government said it would sustain discussions with South African authorities in an effort to address recurring cases of xenophobia and Afrophobia affecting Nigerians and other Africans in the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomed further partnerships with private organisations, philanthropists, faith-based groups and development partners willing to support Nigerians facing difficult circumstances abroad.

The government expressed optimism that RCCG’s donation would help facilitate the safe return of the 500 Nigerians covered by the intervention.
