Fatima Abubakar, to one year in prison for child abuse

Fatima, who will serve her sentence at a correctional facility without the option of a fine, was arrested on October 5, 2024, for abusing her stepchildren, 3-year-old Usman Abubakar and 2-year-old Hafsat Abubakar.

She was initially arraigned alongside her husband, Abubakar Yuguda, who is the father of the children. Both faced charges brought by prosecuting officer SP Iliya Akawu, under sections 60 and 209 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State for child abuse.

Magistrate M. A. Adamu, who presided over the case, found her guilty of cruelty to persons and sentenced her to prison. In addition to the prison term, Fatima was ordered to pay N100,000 to the government and N150,000 for the medical treatment of the two children she abused.

Fatima had admitted to torturing her stepchildren, who had been left in her care. Her husband, however, was granted bail after meeting the required conditions, and his case was adjourned for further hearings.
