Social media erupted with disapproval as fans expected Ayra Starr to adhere to traditional Yoruba customs by bending down in greeting when meeting the elder musician. The video, now viral, captured the singer opting for a handshake instead, leading to accusations of disrespect.
In her post on her official X account, Ayra Starr clarifies that her initial nerves during the encounter hindered her from following customary greetings. The singer expresses regret, emphasizing her Yoruba roots and assuring fans that she later returned to properly greet everyone.
“I’m so sorry, I had just walked in and all the lights and nerves didn’t let me see, but I came back around to greet everyone properly.
I have never been that girl to be disrespectful. I’m a proper Yoruba girl, and the video didn’t start until after I’d greeted Burna’s mom! I’m very sorry to the legend, uncle, and King Sunny Ade,” the post reads, seeking to put an end to the brewing controversy.
