The area, known for the presence of Boko Haram jihadists, witnessed the deadly event. Reports from non-governmental organizations operating in the region indicate that the loggers were en route to collect firewood when their flat-bed vehicle encountered a suspected landmine planted by Boko Haram on the highway outside Pulka village.

The incident occurred on Monday, resulting in 12 fatalities and injuries to several others.

Northeast Nigeria has long been a hotspot for a persistent jihadist insurgency, with Boko Haram targeting rural areas even after losing control of significant territories.

The insurgents are notorious for planting explosive devices, and the recent increase in mine explosions targeting civilian convoys has been linked to jihadist activities.

Though security forces in Nigeria have not officially confirmed the blast, the incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region.

Gwoza, where the jihadists once established their so-called caliphate, was reclaimed by Nigerian troops in 2015. However, the militants persist in operating in the mountains along the border with Cameroon, conducting raids on nearby villages.

Residents in the area have been compelled to seek refuge in camps under military protection. Troops conduct patrols to deter militants from targeting civilians, especially those engaging in activities like collecting firewood and fruits.

Boko Haram and its rival, the Islamic State West Africa Province, frequently target loggers, farmers, and herders, accusing them of collaborating with security forces and anti-jihadist militias.

The insurgency initiated by Boko Haram in 2009 has resulted in the loss of over 40,000 lives and displaced more than two million people. The conflict has spilled into neighboring countries like Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, prompting the creation of a regional military force to combat the militants.
