The Federal Government has clarified that it has no intentions to raise taxes or impose additional financial burdens on taxpayers in the country.

Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, made this statement on Tuesday in response to unverified reports suggesting the government’s plans to raise taxes.

The tax expert explained that the government’s actual intention was to streamline the excessive number of over 60 official taxes in the country to a much smaller, single-digit figure.

He elaborated that the objective was to significantly reduce the count to ensure that citizens don’t face more than 10 different taxes across all levels of government.

“We are confident that this is achievable with the cooperation of everyone, and our efforts will be directed towards closing the tax gap in order to generate revenue without resorting to tax increases,” Oyedele stated.

He mentioned that the committee’s inaugural meeting and workshop are scheduled for next week Tuesday, during which more comprehensive information will be shared with the public.
