BREAKING: Real Reasons Why I’m ‘Fighting’ Governor Fubara – Wike Opens Up

Less than 24 hours after his previous public statement about the political turmoil in Rivers, Mr. Wike has once again addressed the situation.

The conflict between Mr. Wike and Mr. Fubara escalated this week when the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Mr. Fubara. A majority of the state lawmakers align with Mr. Wike, who played a role in Mr. Fubara’s initial appointment before their paths diverged.

In their efforts against Mr. Fubara, the state lawmakers suspended House Leader Edison Ehie and three other lawmakers – Victor Okoh (Bonny Constituency), Goodboy Sokari (Ahoada West Constituency), and Adulphus Timothy (Opobo/Nkoro Constituency) – all reported to be loyal to the governor.

A section of the Rivers House of Assembly Complex was damaged in an explosion on Sunday, a day before the impeachment attempt.

On Monday, police officers deployed teargas and water cannons at Mr. Fubara as the governor, accompanied by security personnel and some youths, presumably his political supporters, approached the assembly complex to assess the extent of the damage caused by the explosion.

The police reported on Wednesday that Governor Fubara was in the midst of an “aggressive” crowd marching towards the Rivers House of Assembly Complex, prompting the deployment of “non-lethal crowd control equipment including tear gas and water cannon to disperse the riotous and uncontrollable protesters.”

“The presence of the Governor at the scene was of great surprise and shock as there was no prior communication to the Police on the visit of the Governor to the scene of the crime which ordinarily is the usual protocol and complimentary that we accompany his guard for proper safety considering the intelligence of security threat at hand then,” the police spokesperson in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, said in a statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Polycarp Emeka.

Fubara and Wike sought to downplay the crisis.

In a previous statement, Mr. Wike stated that the Rivers crisis was an internal matter within the PDP and that the party was addressing it.

On Wednesday, Governor Fubara also tried to minimize the crisis and the disagreement between him and his predecessor, describing it as a mere issue between a “father and son.”

“There is nothing wrong if a father and a son have a problem if there is any problem, but I don’t think there is anything; whatever it is, we will definitely resolve the issue,” Mr Fubara told a visiting military delegation led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu took steps to mediate the crisis during the National Police Council meeting held at the presidential villa. This meeting was attended by both Mr. Fubara and Mr. Wike.

The police council, led by the president, comprises all state governors and the FCT minister, many of whom were present at Tuesday’s gathering.
