the North-West.
Known for his involvement in high-profile kidnappings, brutal killings, and attacks on both civilians and security forces, Turji continues to evade capture despite multiple military offensives in the region. His elusive presence has emboldened his gang, resulting in heightened insecurity in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states.
Recently, Turji issued threats to increase violence in the region, imposing heavy levies on farmers and rural residents, and vowing further attacks on security personnel and civilians. This follows the detention of his brother, Baka Wurgi, by security forces.
A chilling attack occurred shortly after Turji’s threats, when members of his gang abducted 10 passengers and set their vehicle ablaze along the Kaura-Namoda-Shinkafi Road in Zamfara state.
The Defence Headquarters has vowed to neutralize Turji and other terror masterminds by the end of 2025, but security experts argue the strategy must be reevaluated to truly address the growing threat.
Brig. Gen. Bashir Adewinbi (retd.) believes the military can defeat Turji with enhanced collaboration and intelligence from local communities. “The military has the resources to bring him down. But local cooperation is vital for actionable intelligence,” Adewinbi said.
Former Army Chief Gen. Ishola Williams (retd.) emphasized the need for an urgent review of military strategies, particularly questioning the military’s failure to act on intelligence about Turji’s hideouts.
Lt. Col. Ademola Lawal (retd.) called for a comprehensive strategy overhaul, stressing that Turji’s ongoing freedom is due to poor coordination between security agencies. “We need a focused approach to neutralize him and prevent his escape,” Lawal urged.
Air Commodore Abayomi Balogun (retd.) echoed the call for a new strategy, urging for stronger community integration into intelligence efforts. He rejected any notion of negotiating with bandits, stating, “We need a tactical shift if we are to defeat this growing menace.”
Sokoto’s former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa also expressed deep concern, describing the impact of Turji’s threats as devastating to the region, with entire villages abandoned in fear.
The escalating crisis has left many communities vulnerable, with the region’s residents living in constant fear of further attacks. Security experts argue that without immediate action, Turji’s violent grip on the North-West will continue to spread unchecked.
