CBN Defies Criticism: 1,500 Staff Move To Lagos Office, Northerners Express Discontent
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) remains undeterred in its decision to relocate approximately 1,500 members of staff to Lagos, despite heavy criticism and discontent from various quarters, especially Northerners….CONTINUE READING
Scheduled to resume duties on Friday, the move has stirred controversy, with concerns raised about increased costs, talent loss, operational disruptions, reduced coordination, and potential negative impacts on economic development in Northern Nigeria.
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) had expressed apprehension, citing potential repercussions such as economic disparities, impaired development, and decreased investor confidence. Senator Ali Ndume, Chief Whip of the Senate, warned of “political consequences” and suggested that those influencing the decision might not be acting in the President’s best interest.
However, CBN officials confirmed that the relocation plan is progressing as scheduled, with affected staff set to resume work in Lagos on February 2. Despite the criticisms, the move is seen as a strategic decision by the apex bank.
Sources within the CBN revealed that the Banking Supervision Department and the Payment System Department have witnessed significant redeployments, with over 80% of the staff from these departments already relocating to Lagos.
As the controversy unfolds, the CBN’s decision to move key departments to Lagos signals a determination to implement strategic changes, while reactions from various stakeholders underscore the complexities surrounding the relocation. The discontent expressed by Northerners and concerns about potential political ramifications add layers to the unfolding narrative surrounding the CBN’s decision.
