Complete Breakdown Of The Charges That Led To Nnamdi Kanu’s Life Sentence

According to Ireporter Online, the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on all seven terrorism-related charges filed against him by the Federal Government. The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Justice James Omotosho, found Kanu guilty of leading an outlawed organisation, issuing destabilising threats, and inciting violent attacks against security operatives across parts of the country.

The court ruled that Kanu’s actions, including his broadcasts, directives, and recorded statements, clearly demonstrated intent to commit offences outlined in Nigeria’s terrorism laws. Justice Omotosho stated that the prosecution had convincingly proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, noting that Kanu’s messages repeatedly encouraged actions that threatened national security, particularly in the South-East region. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

Certified court documents outline the seven specific charges upheld against him. The first charge accused Kanu of broadcasting, as far back as 2014 and 2015 from London, preparations for states in the South-East, South-South, parts of Kogi, and Benue to secede from Nigeria to form the Republic of Biafra. The second charge involved his 2015 broadcast in which he made defamatory statements against then-President Muhammadu Buhari, comments which were deemed knowingly false under Nigerian law.

The third count involved the unlawful importation of a concealed radio transmitter, TRAM 50L, brought into Nigeria under the guise of used household items in 2015. The fourth charge centred on his open declaration, through Radio Biafra broadcasts between 2018 and 2021, identifying as a member of IPOB despite its proscription.

The fifth count accused Kanu of inciting IPOB members in 2021 to search for and target security personnel and their families. The sixth charge referenced a broadcast in May 2021 in which he predicted imminent violence that would “shake the world,” a statement classified as an act in furtherance of terrorism. The seventh and final count involved his sit-at-home directive in May 2021, during which he warned that violators should “write their will,” causing widespread shutdown of businesses, schools, fuel stations, and road activities across affected states.
