Don’t Discriminate Against Elderly Citizens, Federal Government Advises Nigerians To promotes Respect For Seniors

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to avoid stigmatizing and discriminating against senior citizens. This message was delivered by Dr. Emem Omokaro, the pioneer Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre, during her keynote address at the Humanitarian Service Diamond Awards 2024 in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dr. Omokaro highlighted the concerning trend of viewing elderly individuals as burdens rather than assets to society. She stressed that aging should be celebrated rather than seen as a distraction. Her comments addressed issues such as inadequate health insurance coverage for the elderly and restrictive loan policies from some banks.

“Ageing is what everyone aspires to reach, and it deserves respect and celebration,” Omokaro said. She criticized the perception that older persons contribute little to society, noting that many remain active and influential.

Osahon Okunbo, Chairman of Wells Carlton Hotel and a recipient of the diamond award, echoed these sentiments. He emphasized the value of investing in the elderly as part of humanitarian efforts and urged people to start by supporting their families and communities.

“The greatest investments are in people,” Okunbo remarked, reflecting on the legacy of his late father, Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbor. He encouraged Nigerians to offer help to at least one person, fostering a culture of compassion and support.

The Federal Government’s message aims to shift attitudes towards older persons, recognizing their ongoing contributions and the importance of their inclusion in society.
