Edo Air Talks: Okpebholo, Keyamo Strategise On Aviation Growth

According to Ireporter Online, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday held a strategic meeting with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), in Abuja as discussions intensified over the proposed Edo Air initiative, a key project designed to strengthen the state’s aviation landscape.

The high-level engagement centred on improving air connectivity, stimulating economic activities, and positioning Edo State as a strategic regional hub for business, logistics, and tourism. The talks are part of broader efforts to leverage aviation as a catalyst for economic growth and investment attraction.

Governor Okpebholo described the meeting as a deliberate step by his administration to unlock new opportunities for the state through improved connectivity and infrastructure development. He noted that aviation remains a critical driver for economic expansion, adding that the proposed Edo Air project would deliver long-term benefits to residents, investors, and the wider business community.

The governor further stated that his administration is committed to positioning Edo State as a prime destination for development, emphasising that the establishment of a state-backed airline would enhance tourism, ease transportation, and boost commercial activities across the state.

In his remarks, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, commended the governor’s vision and recalled Benin City’s historic significance in Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly during the era of the defunct Okada Air. He expressed satisfaction that the Edo State Government was taking concrete steps to revive the state’s aviation legacy.

Keyamo assured the governor of the Federal Government’s full support for the Edo Air project, noting that a functional state-backed airline would improve passenger movement, enhance trade, attract investment, and create employment opportunities, especially for young people. He added that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s objective of strengthening regional connectivity and driving economic growth through aviation.

Governor Okpebholo, in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, welcomed the minister’s assurance of support, describing the Federal Government’s backing as critical to the success of the project. He expressed confidence that collaboration between both levels of government would result in an aviation system capable of supporting growth, tourism, and regional development.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the Edo State Government and the Federal Government to deepen collaboration in infrastructure development, economic transformation, and national connectivity.
