Under the Nigeria Integrated Power Project (NIPP), an estimated ₦2 trillion meant to upgrade power infrastructure has either been squandered or mismanaged, with many projects abandoned or stalled. These include major initiatives like the Egbema, Gbarain, Mambilla, and Kukenda power plants, none of which have added to the national grid as intended.

Gas-powered stations, designed to reduce reliance on hydroelectric power and counter seasonal power fluctuations, remain largely non-functional. Additionally, investments in hydro and renewable energy projects such as the Gurara II hydroelectric plant and the Katsina Wind Farm have also failed to yield results.

The power sector’s transmission segment paints an equally grim picture. Since 2007, 334 projects funded by government loans and international agencies have languished incomplete, leaving Nigeria saddled with debt without tangible benefits. The nation’s power generation capacity of 13,000 megawatts is hamstrung by a daily distribution limit of just 4,500 megawatts, forcing reliance on off-grid alternatives like generators and solar systems to meet high electricity demand.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu attributed the failure to politically motivated projects and mismanagement. He emphasized the urgent need to recover misused funds and ensure accountability among stakeholders.

The government must take decisive action, including:

1. Conducting audits to determine which projects can still be revived or completed.
2. Prosecuting individuals responsible for the failure of these initiatives.
3. Recovering funds from erring contractors and stakeholders.

Rather than burdening citizens with electricity tariff hikes, the focus should be on resolving inefficiencies, implementing effective project monitoring, and ensuring transparency. Addressing these systemic failures is crucial to achieving sustainable power solutions for households and industries alike.
