Federal Government Warns Organised-Labour Against Nationwide-Strike (Details)
The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to organised labour ahead of their planned nationwide strike scheduled for Monday, June 3, 2024, cautioning that such action could exacerbate the economic challenges faced by citizens.
In response to the failure to reach a compromise on a new national minimum wage, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) opted to embark on a strike. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejoecha, conveyed the government’s stance, emphasizing that its minimum wage proposals were meticulously formulated to address economic realities and provide innovative solutions.
Onyejoecha highlighted the government’s commitment to investing in strategic sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, education, and healthcare, which are crucial for economic growth. She cautioned that any abrupt increase in the minimum wage could lead to widespread job losses, particularly in the Organised Private Sector.
The statement underscored the government’s dedication to ongoing negotiations with organised labour, aiming to strike a balance between workers’ needs and economic realities. It emphasized the importance of reaching a sustainable agreement that benefits both workers and employers without jeopardizing the country’s economic progress.
The government urged against a strike during negotiations, emphasizing the potential adverse effects on millions of Nigerians already grappling with economic challenges. It advocated for a balanced approach to ensure harmony in the workforce and foster national growth.
