First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Champions Women-Led Food Security Campaign
In a significant move to address food security in Nigeria, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the crucial role women must play in this vital campaign. Speaking at the unveiling of her vegetable garden at the State House Residence, she highlighted the importance of women leading the charge in ensuring food sufficiency across the nation.
Senator Tinubu’s garden, which features a variety of vegetables including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, ewedu, lemongrass, scent leaf, and okra, serves as a practical example for first-time women farmers. She believes that small efforts by individuals can collectively make a significant impact on food insufficiency in the country.
“This little garden will be able to provide healthy vegetables enough for my household, and I would definitely be able to share with some of my staff as well,” she said. “The solution to any problem lies in everyone contributing their own quota to getting that solution. As a leader, I must show example and plant my own garden.”
The First Lady encouraged women across Nigeria to participate in the Every Home A Garden Competition by starting their own home gardens. She stressed that such initiatives not only promote food security but also foster communal living. “The vegetables are medicinal, and the garden is to lead by example for other women to embrace smart gardening,” she added.
Senator Tinubu showcased her garden to Chioma Uzodinma, the Wife of the Imo State Governor, and Mrs. Aisha Matawale, the Wife of the Minister of State for Defence, underscoring the initiative’s importance.
The Every Home A Garden Competition, open to first-time women farmers nationwide, invites participants to submit a 30-second video showcasing their gardens. Entries should be sent to the Office of the Wives of the State Governors by September 25, 2024. The winner will receive a grand prize of N25 million.
This campaign, spearheaded by the First Lady, not only aims to boost food production but also to inspire women to take active roles in national development.
