From “Ogbane” To “Ofone”: The New Nomenclature Dominating Edo Elections As Obaseki Faces Total Rejection
Benin City, Edo State — The political landscape of Edo State is witnessing a seismic shift as the term “Ofone” floods the streets, replacing the once triumphant “Ogbane.” To the typical Edo citizen, “Ogbane” signified confirmation and assurance, a term that rose to prominence during Governor Godwin Obaseki’s 2020 reelection campaign.
It echoed the confidence of his supporters, akin to President Buhari’s “four plus four” reelection mantra. However, just four years later, the streets of Benin are resonating with a starkly different term: “Ofone,” signaling an end and a complete downfall.
The Rise of “Ogbane” and the Fall to “Ofone”
In 2020, despite a less-than-stellar first term, Obaseki’s reelection campaign managed to galvanize support under the banner of “Ogbane,” confirming his victory and promising continued progress. Yet today, “Ofone” — meaning “it is finished” or “completely gone,” similar to the Yoruba term “Otilor”(E don Go) — dominates public discourse, reflecting the people’s disillusionment and the governor’s dramatic fall from grace.
Broken Promises and Public Discontent
Obaseki’s promises of over 200,000 jobs, quality road infrastructures, good health care system , a new seaport, and an additional airport have become mere mirages, leaving the people of Edo disenchanted and eager for his departure. The governor’s failure to deliver on these lofty commitments has turned public sentiment against him, transforming “Ogbane” into a bitter memory and “Ofone” into a rallying cry for change.
Impact on the PDP and Asue Ighodalo
The widespread rejection of Obaseki has severely impacted the candidacy of PDP flag bearer Asue Ighodalo. As a victim of Obaseki’s failed promises, Ighodalo is burdened by the governor’s tarnished legacy.
Obaseki’s contempt for traditional institutions and the organised private sector has exacerbated the problem, with Edo now ranking 37th among states in terms of ease of doing business in Nigeria. Ighodalo is having difficulty separating himself from Obaseki’s shadow as a result of his poor performance.
Public Display of Discontent
The term “Ofone” is not just a verbal expression of dissatisfaction; it has permeated the public sphere. The internet is awash with T-shirts and face caps emblazoned with “Ofone,” symbolizing the collective frustration of the Edo people. The once-supportive electorate now openly scorns the governor, eagerly anticipating the end of his term.
The dramatic shift from “Ogbane” to “Ofone” in Edo State’s political lexicon underscores the profound disappointment with Governor Obaseki’s tenure. As the people of Edo openly reject him, the new term encapsulates their desire for a fresh start and a departure from broken promises. The upcoming elections will undoubtedly be influenced by this wave of discontent, as the electorate seeks leaders who can genuinely deliver on their promises and restore hope to the state.
