The victims were ambushed while returning home with their maize when the assailants opened fire. After killing the farmers, the bandits set the truck and its contents on fire.

“This tragic attack occurred as the victims were about to leave after loading the maize. The attackers, lying in wait, killed them and burned the truck with the produce,” a source told Daily Trust.

This year, Mariga’s farmers have faced significant challenges due to ongoing banditry, including violent attacks and kidnappings.

In another related incident, a resident of Kontagora, Mallam Danjuma, was killed by terrorists after his family failed to pay a N20 million ransom. He had been held captive for three weeks.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the deaths of the seven farmers, with police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun noting that joint security forces were deployed to prevent further attacks and ensure a peaceful harvest season.
