Garri Prices Soar: 108% Increase Sparks Concerns Amidst Nationwide Cassava Shortage

This drastic increment comes amidst a nationwide reduction in the production of cassava, the primary ingredient in garri production, exacerbating the challenges faced by both farmers and consumers.

According to a survey conducted by Daily Post, the price hike is palpable, with a 4-litre paint container measure of yellow garri now fetching an average of N2,500 compared to N1,200 in December 2023. Similarly, a 50kg bag of white garri now commands a price tag of N35,000, marking a significant 105 percent increase from its previous price of N17,000.

Major markets in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reflect similar trends, with the average price of a 50kg bag of yellow garri skyrocketing by 108 percent, soaring from N18,000 in December 2023 to N37,500 in March 2024.

Farmers attribute this production shortfall to a combination of factors, including the adverse impact of climate change, escalating insecurity, and uncertainties surrounding the 2023 elections.

Segun Adewumi, the National President of the Nigeria Cassava Growers Association (NCGA), highlighted the ripple effects of last year’s political transition, which discouraged farmers from extensive cassava cultivation due to uncertainty and potential disruptions.

As consumers grapple with the unprecedented surge in garri prices, stakeholders are calling for urgent interventions to address the underlying factors contributing to the nationwide cassava shortage and alleviate the economic burden on both farmers and consumers.
