Hunger Protest: Tinubu’s Silence Heightening Public Apprehension – PDP
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for his failure to address the nation during the ongoing EndBadGovernance protests.
As Nigerians grapple with severe economic hardships, many are struggling to secure basic necessities. In response, youth-led protests erupted on Thursday and continued through Friday across major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, and Rivers, calling for an end to hunger and poor governance.
In a statement released on Saturday by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, the PDP urged President Tinubu to break his silence, deliver a national address, and address the urgent issues troubling citizens.
The statement read in part: “The PDP demands that President Tinubu promptly address Nigerians on immediate steps to reduce petroleum prices, stabilize the Naira, and ensure swift food distribution, among other critical issues. These measures are essential to revitalize the productive sector, create jobs, and restore stability to the nation.”
“The PDP is deeply concerned that President Tinubu’s silence sends a troubling message, exacerbating public anxiety and suggesting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government is indifferent to the citizens’ plight and the nation’s dire situation.”
“It is alarming that President Tinubu remains silent as Nigerians take to the streets demanding good governance, security, and welfare—core responsibilities of any government.”
The PDP also condemned the reported violence against protesters by APC-controlled security forces and alleged APC-affiliated thugs.
The party has called for a thorough investigation into the deaths of unarmed Nigerians, reportedly at the hands of security operatives, and demanded that President Tinubu address the nation to reassure citizens.
“The PDP insists that, with effective and transparent management of resources, Nigeria’s petrol prices should not exceed N200 per litre. Strategic investments in gas production could help achieve this.”
“The President should also expedite the recovery of over N50 trillion reportedly embezzled by APC leaders, reduce tariffs on essential goods, cut the cost of governance, review luxury expenditures in his administration, and direct recovered funds towards programs that benefit Nigerians.”
The PDP has further urged security agencies to maintain high standards of professionalism in safeguarding citizens while calling for a comprehensive investigation into the violence against unarmed protesters.
