JUST IN: Court Halts Confirmation Of NDDC Chairman, MD (DETAILS)

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order prohibiting the National Assembly from screening and confirming Ms Lauretta Onochie and Chief Samuel Ogbuku’s nominations.

The pair were to be screened and confirmed as chairman and Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, respectively.

The presiding judge, Justice J. K. Omotosho, ordered that all proceedings in the case be stayed pending the outcome of the lawsuit.

Among other things, the summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2294/2022 requests that the National Assembly refrain from screening and confirming the duo.

The plaintiffs, Chief Edward Ekpokpo Esq. and Victor Wood, both representing the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, and Mr Edward Omagbemi, representing the Omadino Unity Forum, are all representing the Itsekiri ethnic nationality and are challenging the nomination on the grounds that it is the Itsekiri nationality’s turn to occupy the positions.

President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; the House of Senate, Mrs Lauretta Onochie, and Chief Samuel Ogbuku are the first to sixth defendants in the suit.

The suit, filed by Ama Etuwewe SAN & Co., demands that the NDDC Act be followed throughout the process.

It maintained that as Delta State’s highest oil-producing community, it is the turn of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality to produce the NDDC board chairman and MD.

After reading the affidavit and hearing the plaintiff’s counsel, the presiding judge, Justice J. K. Omotosho, adjourned the case to January 11, 2023, for further hearing.
