JUST IN: ECOWAS Speaks On Influence Of ‘Foreign Power’ In Efforts To Resolve Political Instability In Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has refuted allegations of external manipulation in its endeavors to address the political instability in Niger Republic. Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, conveyed this message during a live appearance on Channels Television’s program “Sunrise Daily” on Monday.

ECOWAS is actively engaged in restoring political stability to Niger following the military’s overthrow and detention of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26th.

In a meeting held in Accra, Ghana, the West African bloc conferred with military defense chiefs to explore the possibility of an armed intervention aimed at reversing the coup. Some have accused ECOWAS of being influenced by foreign powers in this regard.

Nonetheless, Musah has asserted that external support is not a factor in the considerations of the West African organization.

He emphasized that even if a military operation is executed to remove the junta from power, the nations involved, including ECOWAS, will remain impartial and make autonomous decisions.

“We have never engaged in discussions about our strategies with any foreign nation, whether they are physically present, airborne, or situated in their respective countries. ECOWAS is making independent, self-governing decisions,” Musah clarified.

He pointed out that ECOWAS has not taken into account the complexities associated with individuals and corporations that have established a presence on the ground.

“I have just returned from Accra where the chiefs of defense staff finalized their preparations for a potential military intervention in the nation. Foreign assistance was never part of our considerations at all. We are utilizing our own resources, equipment, and contingents without seeking assistance from anyone. This is ECOWAS’s stance,” he emphasized.

The regional organization has imposed a range of sanctions on Niger and has issued a threat of military action if the leaders of the coup fail to reinstate power to Bazoum. Some have accused ECOWAS of acting in accordance with France’s instructions.

“We are not concerned about who endorses the use of force. What we are underscoring is that force is one of the tools at our disposal for reinstating constitutional order. Nevertheless, we have not exhausted the non-coercive elements within our constitutional framework within the nation,” Musah concluded.
