Kano Govt Gives Reason For Removing Bayero’s Portrait, Replacing It With Sanusi’s Portrait In Coronation Hall
Yesterday, the city of Kano was filled with anxiety as the portrait of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, suddenly reappeared in Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano. The hall, which is currently undergoing renovation, previously displayed portraits of Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and other emirs from the four emirate councils.
The unexpected reappearance of Sanusi’s portrait has reignited rumors about the possibility of reinstating the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), three years after his dethronement. Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had dethroned Sanusi in 2020, citing allegations of insubordination, failure to attend emirate council meetings, and working against the government.

Former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, expressed his intention to revisit the issues surrounding Sanusi’s removal when the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won the last election and reclaimed control of Kano from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration, while neither confirming nor refuting Kwankwaso’s comment, had often described the NNPP government as a continuation of Kwankwaso’s administration.
The state government stated that the inclusion of Sanusi’s portrait in Coronation Hall signifies the significance of the 14th Emir to the state. According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the hall holds historical importance for the 14th Emir, as it was built for his presentation of the staff of office when he succeeded the late Ado Bayero in 2014, during the administration of Kwankwaso. Therefore, it is tradition for his picture to remain there permanently, and the reinstallation is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to enhance Coronation Hall’s appearance.
