Libya vs. Nigeria Airport Drama CAF Sets Date For High-Stakes Ruling
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is preparing to deliver its ruling on the airport incident involving Libya and Nigeria. Members of the Nigerian team were stranded at Al Abraq Airport for nearly 20 hours, prompting significant backlash……CONTINUE READING
The African football governing body has officially set a date to announce its decision regarding the unfortunate event.
The debacle at Al Abraq Airport has generated considerable discussion, as the Super Eagles were left unattended upon their arrival for the return leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. For close to 20 hours, the players and staff found themselves trapped in the airport lounge without food or supplies, a situation many have likened to being held hostage.
The Libyan Football Federation’s (LFF) treatment of the Nigerian team has drawn strong criticism from various football stakeholders, including CAF, which condemned the incident.
CAF has established an investigative panel to look into the airport situation, and reports indicate that the governing body will announce its judgment on Wednesday, October 23.
The Libyan federation has submitted all relevant documentation through a lawyer appointed by CAF to handle the case. Following the disrupted match, CAF removed the fixture from its schedule and canceled it just hours before kickoff, referring the matter to its Disciplinary Committee for further examination.
The potential sanctions facing both Libya and Nigeria remain unclear, but they could include fines, points deductions, and even stadium bans.
Regarding the possible repercussions for Nigeria, reports suggest that the Super Eagles might face sanctions for abandoning the match against Libya. Article 62 of the CAF AFCON regulations outlines potential penalties, but it also provides avenues for appeal and exceptions, which may apply in Nigeria’s situation.
