Man Arrested After Threatening To Murder In-Law Over Daughter’s Hand In Marriage
A 34-year-old man from Gamba Village in Hwange has been fined $150 after he threatened to kill a fellow villager who refused his demand to marry off his daughter.
The accused, Irvine Shoko, appeared in the Hwange Magistrates Court facing charges of making death threats and possessing a prohibited weapon.
Shoko was given the choice to pay the fine or serve a three-month prison sentence. The court also imposed a three-month suspended sentence, which will be in effect for five years. If Shoko commits a similar offense during this time, the suspended sentence will be activated.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on the night of June 6 around 10 p.m. when Shoko approached the home of fellow villager Possent Nyathi. After demanding that Nyathi give him his daughter in marriage, Nyathi refused, which led to an angry confrontation. Shoko allegedly threatened to kill Nyathi, prompting him to report the incident to the police. Upon his arrest, authorities discovered Shoko in possession of an okapi knife, a prohibited weapon under Zimbabwean law.
