NBS Report: Road Tax Collections Jump By 63% Amid Transportation Growth

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a 63% rise in road tax collections by state governments in 2023, highlighting the growing significance of transportation in state revenue generation. reached ₦40.14 billion in 2023, up from ₦24.57 billion in 2022.Road tax refers to daily levies paid by commercial transporters operating within the state.

Notably, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not generate any road tax revenue during the year. Lagos State led the nation, collecting ₦16.74 billion, which accounted for 41.7% of the national total.

Ebonyi State saw the largest increase, with a remarkable 3,804.32% surge, from ₦72.95 million in 2022 to ₦2.85 billion in 2023. Rivers State also experienced significant growth, with its revenue rising by 270.66% to ₦830.01 million from ₦223.93 million.

Other states such as Sokoto and Yobe reported increases in road tax collections, with Sokoto growing by 41.22% to ₦194.66 million and Yobe seeing a 30.4% rise to ₦81.88 million.

On the other hand, Enugu State faced a dramatic decline of 95.12%, dropping from ₦1.1 billion in 2022 to ₦53.47 million in 2023. Katsina and Niger States also saw declines, with Katsina’s revenue falling by 79.34% and Niger’s dropping by 53.41%.
