This plea was made during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program on Wednesday.

Ndume’s proposal reflects a growing concern regarding the use of police personnel as private security for elected officials and political figures, a practice under scrutiny for its impact on national security and resource allocation.

His call for the withdrawal of these orderlies comes amid various security challenges facing the country, including insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes, prompting questions about the allocation of security resources.

“I support that they should take away all their police (officers),” Ndume stated. “One Senator will be going around with 10 policemen, seven members of the House of Representatives, everybody. That is for those who are mobile. Some even give security to their wives, others give security to their children. I am against that.”

Ndume emphasized that Nigeria, with approximately 300,000 policemen, lacks sufficient personnel to police the entire country. Therefore, he believes that orderlies of Very Important Personalities should be withdrawn to prioritize public safety.

He suggested, “Let’s have like 2 million police, 500K soldiers.”

Ndume urged President Bola Tinubu to provide security agencies with ample resources and funding to combat banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency effectively.

He advocated for empowering the police force to increase its manpower to two million officers and the military to 500,000 personnel.

Despite his stance on boosting security forces, Ndume expressed reluctance towards supporting state police if proposed during the constitution amendment process, citing concerns about potential abuse by governors.
