President Bola Tinubu has affirmed Nigeria’s dedication to deepening its partnership with China. This commitment, highlighted in an op-ed published in China Daily on September 5, 2024, underscores Nigeria’s ambition to expand its bilateral trade with China, which reached an impressive $22.6 billion last year.

Tinubu’s op-ed details the key areas of focus for this enhanced relationship, including infrastructure, trade, finance, and energy. He praised China’s substantial contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure development, noting the pivotal role of Chinese investments in building railways, roads, and other essential public works.

One of the cornerstone projects Tinubu highlighted is the Lagos-Ibadan Railway. The President anticipates future collaboration on the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano section, which promises to further boost connectivity and economic growth across the country. He emphasized that transportation infrastructure is crucial for development, facilitating the movement of people and goods, connecting markets, and creating investment opportunities.

Additionally, Tinubu spotlighted the LAGRIDE initiative, a collaboration between Lagos State and CIG Motors, as a model for advancing e-mobility in Africa. This partnership represents a significant step towards modernizing transportation and promoting sustainable development.

The President also acknowledged the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping, attributing China’s rise as a global economic powerhouse to Xi’s visionary reforms. Tinubu drew parallels between the transformative changes in both nations, illustrating Nigeria’s efforts to rejuvenate its economy and drive sustainable growth.

Tinubu’s upcoming visit to China and participation in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) are expected to fortify the already robust bilateral ties. He expressed confidence that these engagements will lead to deeper cooperation and mutually beneficial results for both nations.

As Nigeria advances its “Renewed Hope” agenda, focusing on economic revitalization and infrastructure improvement, the partnership with China is set to play a pivotal role. With ongoing collaboration in trade, transportation, and energy, Nigeria aims to harness Chinese expertise and investment to fuel long-term development.

In the face of global challenges and opportunities, this strengthened commitment to Nigeria-China relations positions both countries as key players in shaping the future of international trade and infrastructure development across Africa and beyond.
