Nigeria Appoints David Fizdale As D’Tigers Head Coach, Sets Sights On 2028 Olympic Glory

According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has officially appointed American coach David Fizdale as the new head coach of the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, in a strategic move aimed at securing qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The federation announced the appointment on Saturday, stating that it forms part of a broader long-term restructuring plan designed to strengthen Nigeria’s basketball framework and build a more competitive team capable of consistently performing at elite international level.

Fizdale, who previously coached in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, and later served as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns between 2023 and 2025, is expected to bring significant top-level experience to the role.

In its statement, the NBBF expressed confidence in the new coach, noting that his leadership background, technical expertise, and experience within the NBA ecosystem would be valuable to Nigeria’s ambitions on the global stage.

The qualification journey for D’Tigers will begin at the FIBA Basketball World Cup African qualifiers in Luanda, where Nigeria is scheduled to face Angola, Guinea, Tunisia, and Rwanda.

Speaking after his appointment, Fizdale described the role as deeply personal, especially with the prospect of the Olympics being hosted in his home country. He said returning to a head coaching position was both exciting and motivating, adding that his primary goal is to help Nigeria not only qualify for the Olympics but also compete strongly for a medal.

He also emphasized that the opportunity to potentially lead the team at the Los Angeles Olympics in front of his family made the assignment particularly meaningful, describing it as a “full circle” moment in his career.

Nigeria, which has made three Olympic appearances in basketball without winning a medal, continues to pursue a stronger international presence. NBBF president Musa Kida said Fizdale’s appointment reflects the federation’s ambition to elevate standards across coaching, player development, and overall basketball structure in the country.

Fizdale also acknowledged the influence of former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown in encouraging him to take up the challenge, noting that discussions between them helped shape his decision to accept the role.

He is expected to begin immediate preparations as Nigeria begins its qualification campaign, while also contributing to broader development programs aimed at improving coaching quality and talent progression within the country.
