Nigerians React As 10th-Senate Passes 25-Bills And 115-Resolutions In First Year (Details)
The 10th Senate has passed 25 bills and 115 resolutions in the past year, according to a statement by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele in Abuja, marking the first anniversary of the 10th Senate. The Senate also screened and confirmed 215 nominees for various positions by President Bola Tinubu.
Bamidele highlighted the Senate’s strategic collaboration with key public institutions, especially the Executive Arm, to defend the nation’s core interests. He emphasized the significance of the 25-year unbroken democratic rule and the Parliament’s central role in the growth of representative democracy.
“The 10th National Assembly precisely turns one today. Its first anniversary is almost coincident with National Democracy Day, which Nigerians, regardless of their faith, ideology, or nationality, celebrated on Wednesday, June 12, 2024,” the statement read.
In the last year, the Senate initiated 477 bills, with only 25 fully passed into law. Bamidele noted that the low number of fully enacted legislations is due to other pressing national priorities. Among the introduced bills, 275 were read for the first time, 135 are awaiting the first reading, 45 are awaiting the second reading, 43 are at the committee stage, and three were refused. Additionally, 13 of the total bills originated from the executive arm, while 464 are private member bills.
The Senate also addressed 115 resolutions from motions of national importance and successfully resolved 50 public petitions. Furthermore, the Senate confirmed 215 nominees for key political offices, including positions in the Federal Executive Council, Central Bank of Nigeria, Armed Forces, Police Force, Immigration Service, Customs Service, EFCC, and ICPC.
Bamidele reiterated the Senate’s commitment to addressing strategic national interests and supporting the government in building a resilient economy and an equitable federation. He highlighted ongoing efforts to develop legal frameworks to stabilize fiscal and monetary policies, prioritize security, reduce food inflation, and enhance governance structures.
“As we embark upon the journey into a brighter, greater, and more glorious future, we will devote much of our time to developing legal frameworks that will further stabilize our fiscal and monetary spaces; that will prioritize the security of lives and strategic assets; that will de-escalate consumer price index, especially food inflation, and that will engender a more functional governance structure,” Bamidele stated.
