NJC Recommends Elevation Of Judge Behind ‘Clerical Error’ In Kano Election Judgement To Supreme Court

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has put forward the names of 11 justices for appointment to the Supreme Court, including Justice Moore Aseimo A. Adumein. Notably, Justice Adumein had signed the controversial judgement in the Kano governorship election appeal, where the Court of Appeal initially upheld the decision of the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal but later contradicted itself in the certified true copy of the judgement.

In the November 17 judgement, Justice Adumein’s panel affirmed the tribunal’s decision, declaring Nasiru Gawuna of the APC as the winner of the Kano governorship election.

However, when the certified true copy was released, the court set aside the tribunal’s judgement and awarded costs in favor of the NNPP against the APC, citing “clerical errors” to explain the contradictions.

Despite the public outcry and calls for an investigation into the matter, the NJC, responsible for penalizing erring judges and promoting deserving ones, recommended Justice Adumein for promotion to the Supreme Court.

The swearing-in of the recommended candidates will occur after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approves their recommendation, and the Senate confirms their appointments.

Additionally, the statement from the NJC’s director of Information, Soji Oye, mentioned that the heads of court recommended for other positions would be sworn in after approval by their respective state governors and confirmation by their state Houses of Assembly.

The statement read, “The NJC, at its 104th meeting on Wednesday, December 6 considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee and at the end of deliberations, recommended the under-listed names of successful candidates as heads of courts and other judicial officers for the Federal and State Courts in Nigeria.”
