Obaseki Allegedly Gifts Deputy Governor’s Allocated SUV To Assembly Speaker
The purported reconciliation between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, may not be as genuine as it seemed, as Governor Obaseki’s actions continue to suggest a lack of forgiveness.
The rift between the two arose over Shaibu’s aspiration to run in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Concerned about the potential for impeachment and sensing Obaseki’s reluctance to support his ambition, Shaibu obtained a court injunction in Abuja.

After mediation by various parties, including party and religious leaders, Shaibu issued a heartfelt apology to his boss, who publicly declared his forgiveness.
However, weeks after this widely publicized reconciliation, the deputy governor remains conspicuously absent from government functions and activities. He was notably missing from the swearing-in ceremonies of Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants in the Edo north senatorial district.

Despite the public apologies and acceptance of forgiveness, indications suggest that there may still be underlying tensions in the relationship between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
Furthermore, Shaibu’s involvement in sports-related events, which were once among his primary responsibilities, has been notably reduced. His disengagement from activities involving the state-owned Bendel Insurance FC is reportedly impacting the fortunes of the team.
In a recent development, it is alleged that the Toyota Landcruiser purchased for the deputy governor’s use has been handed over to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku. This vehicle was acquired approximately three months ago to replace the one assigned to Shaibu seven years ago during their first term in office. The source explained that initially, only one vehicle, a Toyota Landcruiser, was designated for the deputy governor’s office, and the escort vehicles in his convoy were provided by his associates to ensure his safety.
According to the source, “In the second tenure, the same vehicle allocated to the deputy governor about seven years ago is yet to be replaced.
“It was because of this that it became obvious when the Governor handed the Speaker a Toyota Landcruiser and a Toyota Hilux, instead of a Lexus sports utility vehicle that was approved for him.
“The Toyota Landcruiser was allegedly bought for the use of the deputy governor approximately three months ago as a replacement for the one given to him seven years ago,” the source explained.
The source lamented the unfortunate incident, expressing disbelief that the Governor would intentionally withhold the vehicle that was allocated and purchased in his deputy’s name for a second term.
