PDP Governors Push For State Police, Contribute N100 Million To Plateau Victims

During a visit to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Rayfield Government House in Jos, the governors announced a N100 million donation to the victims of the recent Plateau attacks.

The PDP governors argued that the decentralization of the existing police system was crucial for establishing state police across Nigeria to effectively address the country’s pervasive security challenges.

Among the PDP governors present during the visit were Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

After the visit, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Muhammed, acknowledged the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies but stressed that the citizen-to-police ratio was excessively low.

He emphasized that the absence of state police led to the formation of vigilante groups in various states, citing the establishment of Amotekun in the South-West as an example.

Muhammed stated, “We are not indicting unreasonably the Nigeria police or the security agencies as they are doing their best, but certainly the ratio of the citizens to the number of policemen is too low.

Nigerians want to sleep with their eyes closed and go about their normal duties peacefully. That is why we’re calling on the Federal Government to up its game by considering the establishment of state police in the country.”

He highlighted the need for decentralization of the security apparatus to enhance good governance through the establishment of efficient state police.

The governors also presented a N100 million contribution to support the victims of the unfortunate incidents, expressing confidence in Governor Mutfwang’s commitment to inclusiveness and understanding that Plateau State is home to all.
