According to sources, four PDP governors – Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) – are backing Wike’s efforts to retain Damagum in the position. However, key figures like Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, and Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke are opposing his continued tenure as acting chairman.

Since Damagum’s appointment following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal by the court, he has faced mounting criticism, and calls for his resignation have become louder. A senior PDP member revealed that Wike’s faction has finalized plans to suspend or expel key opponents, particularly those loyal to Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. The faction is also reportedly targeting Ikenga Ugochinyere, the PDP representative for Ideato North/Ideato South in Imo State, due to his public criticisms of both Wike and Damagum.

In response, Timothy Osadolor, the Deputy National Youth Leader and a member of the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC), downplayed these reports, suggesting that such speculations are part of normal political maneuvering. He insisted that members voicing dissatisfaction with Damagum’s leadership were simply exercising their right to express their ideals.

Meanwhile, Kola Ologbondiyan, another NEC member, praised the Board of Trustees (BoT) for supporting the selection of a substantive National Chairman from the North Central zone. He also expressed optimism that despite the current internal conflicts, the PDP would overcome its challenges, with former National Secretary Umar Ibrahim-Tsauri echoing the sentiment that the party would prevail over internal crises.
