Prison Controversy: Panel Digs Deep Into Claims Of Bobrisky’s Unfair Privileges
The controversy surrounding the alleged preferential treatment of Mr. Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, continues to draw attention as an investigation panel appointed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, probes the truth behind the claims, according to iReporter Online.
At the independent investigative panel on alleged corruption, abuse of power, torture, and degrading treatment within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the panel’s secretary, Dr. Uju Agomoh, stated that the inquiry would not only examine the circumstances leading to Bobrisky’s treatment but also verify if he actually served his sentence, according to iReporter Online.
The panel is also tasked with investigating claims that an inmate at the Kuje post-torture centre was intimidated, threatened, and defrauded by the officer in charge.
Furthermore, it will scrutinize violations of established rules and regulations governing correctional officers’ conduct and the treatment of inmates.
According to iReporter Online, the panel’s broader mandates include identifying obstacles to the effective implementation of the Legislative and Correctional Services Act 2019, ensuring compliance with international human rights standards, promoting non-custodial measures, and enhancing rehabilitation and reintegration efforts for offenders.
Dr. Uju Agomoh explained that the first phase of the investigation has been conducted, involving a comprehensive review of all documents related to corruption, torture, and cruel treatment reported by inmates or credible sources.
The panel is also examining the organizational culture and policies within correctional facilities that may contribute to human rights violations.
Earlier, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior and chairperson of the panel, ordered the immediate relocation of inmates from the Abeokuta facility due to poor sanitary conditions, and demanded status reports on booster homes within two weeks.
According to iReporter Online, she emphasized that the investigative panel is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice within the correctional system.
