SSANU has issued a stern warning, threatening to disrupt operations in universities across the country by shutting down hostels and power supply if the government fails to address its grievances before March 18, 2024.

In a statement to Channels TV, SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, revealed a startling revelation that even Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars have not received their salaries, adding weight to their agitation.

Expressing regret over the potential impact on students, Ibrahim emphasized the severity of the strike, highlighting the disruption it would cause to essential services like electricity, water, security, and administrative functions.

The SSANU leadership criticized the government’s selective treatment, alleging that while salaries were paid to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), other unions like SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) were neglected.

Ibrahim further accused the Office of the Accountant General, through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), of disregarding SSANU and NASU despite waivers granted by the President following the 2022 industrial action.

According to Ibrahim, the crisis stems from a skewed sense of priorities, asserting that all university stakeholders should be treated equitably.

SSANU’s decision to strike follows an eight-month industrial action in 2022, during which they pressed for improved welfare conditions. The former administration under President Muhammadu Buhari invoked a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ against the unions, and partial salary payments were made to ASUU members under President Bola Tinubu’s administration in October last year.
