Tragedy in Kano: Four Drown in Railway-Blocked Drainage Channel

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of four young men in Kano State after they drowned in a waterway obstructed by construction activity in the Zangon Kaya area of Dawakin Tofa Local Government. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the fatal accident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, as local authorities scrambled to respond to the unfolding emergency.

According to iReporter Online, the accident was reported through an emergency call received at approximately 1:48 p.m. by the fire service. The distress alert, made by a resident identified as Rabiu Yusif, indicated that four individuals had fallen into a blocked drainage channel, which had become swollen due to nearby railway construction.

Fire Service spokesperson Saminu Abdullahi revealed that two of the victims initially entered the waterway to swim and were quickly overwhelmed by the force of the water. A third person entered in an attempt to rescue them but also became trapped. The same fate befell the fourth victim, who tried to save the others but was likewise pulled under.

By the time the rescue team arrived, local residents had managed to retrieve two of the victims, while fire service personnel recovered the remaining two. All four were unconscious upon retrieval and were later confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of the Dawanau Police Division for official documentation and further procedures.

According to iReporter Online, the victims were identified as Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22). Authorities attributed the deaths to swimming in a poorly maintained and obstructed water channel, describing the tragedy as the outcome of unsupervised activity in a hazardous area.

Emergency service officials reiterated the dangers of entering blocked or stagnant waterways, especially those affected by ongoing infrastructure projects.
