The grim revelation came to light as Camp Commandant Felix Aponi Banke disclosed the tragic events during a fact-finding visit led by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir James Iorpuu.

According to Banke, the assailants targeted Camp 2, where nine individuals lost their lives, and the most recent attack occurred at Gbajimba Camp 1, bringing the total number of casualties to 10, with the latest victim yet to be laid to rest.

Expressing the challenges faced by the camp, Banke highlighted the pressing issue of diarrhea due to the lack of potable water. The camp management endeavors to collaborate with community leaders to secure land for proper burials, demonstrating resilience amid adversity.

Distressed IDPs in the camps shared their fear of nightly attacks, making peaceful sleep an elusive luxury. In response, SEMA boss James Iorpuu assured the IDPs that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is actively collaborating with the Federal Government and international partners to facilitate the safe and prompt return of displaced individuals to their ancestral homes.

As the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the ongoing challenges, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the security concerns faced by IDPs in the region.
