Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, expressed surprise at the apparent contradiction between online criticism and the real-life encounters where people approach him for pictures at events and public places. He questioned whether he, the subject of online insults, was truly the one people desired to photograph.

Recounting an experience at an event organized by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, in Lagos, Wike highlighted the stark contrast between the negative portrayal on social media and the positive reception he received in person.

He shared, “If you see social media, you would think this man is the most evil person. Immediately I entered the place, every Nigerian wanted to snap with me. I wonder if it is me that people want to snap with or a devil or ghost.”

Wike humorously mentioned a conversation with the Chief of Staff, where he was mistaken as the party organizer. Despite the paradox, he acknowledged the unexpected popularity.

Reflecting on a similar incident at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) chairman’s home, Zacheus Adedeji, Wike mused about the potential income if he were receiving money for such encounters.

The minister attributed the positive reception to the impact he has made in people’s lives, citing instances of Nigerians abroad volunteering to assist him at airports, illustrating the goodwill he has garnered.
