Workers Mobilize For Nationwide Solidarity March As NLC President Ajaero Faces Serious Police Allegations 

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive to its members across the country to engage in a peaceful prayer procession on August 29, 2024, in solidarity with its President, Joe Ajaero. This comes after the police summoned Ajaero for interrogation on charges including alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.”

In a letter addressed to all NLC affiliates and state councils, the NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, emphasized the need for members to show solidarity in response to what the NLC considers as baseless charges against their leader.

“We call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilise their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity. All Central Working Committee members resident in Abuja and other members are expected to assemble at the National Headquarters of the NLC by 8:00 a.m. on August 29. This is to accompany the President to the police for the scheduled interaction,” Ugboaja stated.

The NLC has instructed members in state capitals to gather at their respective state secretariats of the Congress and proceed to their State Police Headquarters for a prayer session, which will last until Ajaero’s interaction with the police is concluded.

Ugboaja further noted, “This peaceful march is a united stand against the unjust actions aimed at intimidating our leadership and stifling the voice of Nigerian workers. We urge all members to remain peaceful and orderly throughout the procession and prayer session. If for any reason the President is detained, all workers nationwide shall proceed on an indefinite strike.”

The NLC has called for the unwavering support of its members during this critical period, emphasizing the importance of defending civil rights, the integrity of the labour movement, and the rights of Nigerian workers. “Together, we shall overcome these challenges and continue to uphold justice, fairness, and democracy in our dear nation,” Ugboaja concluded.
